Ouch! Tips on taking care of sunburned skin this summer

A sunburn is skin damage from the sun’s ultraviolet (UV) rays. Most sunburns cause mild pain and redness but affect only the outer layer of skin. These are called first-degree burns. The red skin might hurt when you touch it. These sunburns are mild and can usually be treated at home.

Skin that is red and painful and that swells up and blisters may mean that deep skin layers and nerve endings have been damaged. These are second-degree burns. This type of sunburn is usually more painful and takes longer to heal.

How can you care for yourself at home?

• Use cool cloths on the sunburned areas.

• Take cool showers or baths often.

• Apply soothing aloe vera to sunburned areas. Do not apply lotions to blistered skin.

• A sunburn can cause a mild fever and a headache. Lie down in a cool, quiet room to relieve the headache. A headache may be caused by not getting enough fluids, called dehydration, so drinking fluids may help.

• Take anti-inflammatory medicines to reduce pain, swelling, and fever. These include ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin) and naproxen (Aleve). Follow all instructions on the label.

• Use lotion to relieve the itching when your skin peels. There is nothing you can do to stop skin from peeling after a sunburn. It is part of the healing process.

• Protect your skin from the sun with sunscreen, hats with wide brims, sunglasses, and loose-fitting, tightly woven clothing that covers your arms and legs.

Caring for blisters

Small blisters usually heal on their own.

• Do not try to break the blisters. Just leave them alone.

• Do not cover the blisters unless something such as clothing is rubbing against them. If you do cover them, apply a loose bandage. You can use tape to hold the bandage on, but do not let the tape touch the blisters.

• Avoid wearing clothes or shoes or doing activities that rub or irritate the blisters until they have healed.

Larger blisters, which are the size of a nickel or larger, usually heal without problems.

• If you have a large blister, you can consider draining it, unless your doctor told you not to. Clean a needle with rubbing alcohol or soap and water, then use it to gently puncture the edge of the blister. Press the fluid in the blister toward the hole you made. Wash the blister after you have drained it, and pat it dry with clean gauze.

• Do not remove the flap of skin covering the blister unless it tears or gets dirty or pus forms under it. The flap protects the healing skin underneath.

• Put a thin layer of petroleum jelly on the bandage before you apply it. This will keep the bandage from sticking to the blister. Do not use alcohol or iodine on the blister because these may make the blister heal more slowly.

• Do not wrap tape completely around a hand, arm, foot, or leg because it could cut off the blood supply if the limb swells. If the tape is too tight, you may develop numbness, tingling, pain, or cool and pale or swollen skin.

• Change the bandage every day or when wet or dirty. Soak the bandage to remove easily.

When should you call for help?

Call your doctor or 811 now or seek immediate medical care if:

• You have signs of needing more fluids. You have sunken eyes, a dry mouth, and you pass only a little urine.

• You have signs of infection, such as:

o Increased pain, swelling, warmth, or redness.

o Red streaks leading from the area.

o Pus draining from the area.

o A fever.

Sibshops provides a safe, confidential, non-judgmental, and fun environment where brothers and sisters of special needs siblings meet other siblings, enabling them to develop supportive relationships and coaching skills.
With a lot of fun and laughter involved, sibs have the opportunity to talk to other sibs about the good and not-so-good parts of having a sibling with special needs. Quite often, attending Sibshops is the first time a sibling meets others who “get it.”
Those who attend experience a lasting positive effect on how they feel towards their sibling, learn coping strategies for sticky situations, and leave with a better understanding of the services their sibs need. If your interested please contact the Vulcan FCSS office via Facebook or call 403-485-2192.

Are you or a loved one living with cancer?

Wellspring is a not for profit cancer support organization, and ALL of their services and programs are completely free. Their non-clinical cancer support programs meet the emotional, social and practical needs of people living with cancer for both patients and caregivers. All their programs and services are accessible to anyone living in southern Alberta or beyond via Zoom or the telephone. When it is safe to do so, they will operate in a hybrid model of both online programs and in-person programs both in Calgary and in pilot communities across southern Alberta outside of Calgary.

Since their outreach project started in March 2020, they are serving members from communities more than 100km away more than ever before, including Vulcan. Not only are these cancer patients, caregivers and families benefiting from our programs but they are being connected with a community of people ‘who get it’. They have programs for families with children, an Indigenous Cancer Sharing Circle, Young Adults, people living with a cancer that may never go away, programs just for caregivers and just for people who live in regional and remote communities and more. You can read more here:

wellspringcalgary.ca/ There is no cost or referral required to become a member.

Fecal Immunochemical Test (FIT) is the recommended screening test for people aged 50 to 74 at average risk for colorectal cancer. This free, simple, at-home test checks your stool (poop) for traces of blood that you can’t see. Having regular colorectal cancer screening can prevent and detect cancer at its early stages when treatment is more effective.

Screening for Life provides free FIT kits after a brief questionnaire to determine if FIT tests are the best option for you. Go to screeningforlife.ca/order-free-fit-kit/ or call Screening for Life at 1-866-727-3926

April 2022 Vulcan County Family Resources

Volunteer Appreciation Week happens in April and I hope everyone takes a minute to appreciate how much happens in our communities because of volunteers. From single, small jobs, to really big commitments. Volunteering not only builds strong communities but also builds you, as an individual up from the inside. If you already volunteer, then soak in a little of all our appreciation for what you do. If you’re thinking about volunteering, then give us a call and we will help you find a match for what will fill your bucket. 403-485-2192. If you are unable to volunteer at this time, stop and thank someone who is able contribute, help encourage others and make them feel like they matter. If you scroll down, I have included a list of many of the organizations that rely on volunteers in Vulcan County, and I am sure I have missed some. It makes me appreciate how great our community is when I see how many volunteer their time. I’ve also included a list and posters of a few that are currently seeking volunteers.

> The Centre for Mental Health and Addictions is a non-profit organization. We offer comprehensive, professional counselling services on a free, low-cost, and sliding scale fee with no cap on the number of sessions. There are no population-specific requirements to receive these services and we believe that cost should never be a barrier to getting much needed proper psychological treatment.
>
> We provide our services through virtual sessions/telepsychology so that mental health services can be accessible to clients in rural and remote areas. This will also be convenient for clients who have no means or access to transportation, or who are not physically able to attend in-person sessions or those who suffer from social anxiety.
>
> We are offering our services free of charge in 2022. We would like to extend these free services to the members of your community.

February 2022 Vulcan County Family Resources

Below are events and programs happening in Vulcan County and Resources available in person and online. Please have a good look and share them with family, friends, clients and associates.

One nice thing about the increase in online webinars, it has never been so easy to access Parenting Workshops. We are never done learning and especially when we are dealing with a particular concern at a developmental stage for our kids, it is nice to build our skill set from home or the office without driving anywhere or needing a babysitter. Maybe a quiet room would be nice though! The Greater Foothills Family Centre has had great turnouts for their parenting workshops now that it is so easy to log on. Scroll to the bottom of the email to see a list of many workshops below from GFFC and AHS (CYF, CES), that are available for no cost.

What is the Connections Registry?

Inclusion Foothills understands that caring for an individual with special needs requires a great deal of focus and attention. Parents and caregivers may need assistance to be able to take a break or focus their attention on other important matters.
Because of this, Inclusion Foothills has developed a database of potential Care Providers. This registry helps connect families to Respite, Job Coaching, PT, OT and SLP assistance providers when they are in need. Please Contact us to access database of respite providers.
Inclusion Foothills serves as a referral agency only to assist in introducing individuals and/or families and care providers. Positions acquired through the Inclusion Foothills Connections Registry are considered self-employment.

Cancer Support
Wellspring serves patients and caregivers living with cancer from every community in southern Alberta ( and beyond). We do have a number of members from Claresholm, Vulcan and Nanton already.

You can read more here: https://wellspringcalgary.ca/

They also have a health and community partner newsletter which you can sign up to here : https://wellspringcalgary.ca/health-partners/ This page also includes posters and brochures which you can download and share. There is no cost or referral required to become a member. There is an online membership form here https://wellspringcalgary.ca/programs-services/become-a-member/ or they can assist people over the phone.
