May 2023 Vulcan County Family Resources

News

A Fire Restriction has been placed effective, April 17th, due to the dry, windy, and warm conditions that exist and are forecasted. There is a very high risk of fire spread during windy conditions in and cured (dead and dry) grass fuel type, such as those that exist across the County. Due to the rapidly changing weather conditions and the fine fuel moisture content, Vulcan County may move to a Ban with little to no notice. Please check out vulcancounty.ab.ca or the Alberta Fire Bans website for the most up to date information.

Alberta Health Services is pleased to share that we have launched a new advice and guidance line for parents, guardians and caregivers of children and youth (birth to 18 years of age) with concerns about their child’s development and well-being. The Pediatric Rehabilitation Line provides advice about developmental milestones in areas such as:

  • Moving and playing (e.g., crawling, coordination, playing with toys)
  • Talking and listening (e.g., babbling, understanding directions, stuttering)
  • Taking care of self (e.g., dressing, toileting, sleeping)
  • Managing emotions (e.g., calming self, becoming overwhelmed or overstimulated)
  • Difficulty eating or swallowing (e.g., coughing, gagging)
  • Hearing (e.g., responding to sounds, noise, voices, words)
  • Are recovering from COVID-19
  • Are looking for current rehabilitation resources (e.g., links to information or webinars)
  • Are looking for help to find local services

How to connect

This Alberta-only line is answered by Allied Health clinicians and operates Monday to Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Parents, guardians and caregivers can call 811 or the Rehabilitation Advice Line (1-833-379-0563) to be prompted to the Pediatric Rehabilitation Line.

Free webinar series

AHS also offers free webinars that cover a range of developmental topics, from toilet training and tummy time to emotional regulation and speech development, as well as many others. Parents and caregivers will build skills and gain confidence by learning practical ways to help children and youth improve their skills while supporting development. Information and registration can be accessed here.

You can also visit Together4Health to access the latest information, strategies, and resources for supporting youth and child development.

  • Caregiver Education Sessions

These online sessions are intended to provide parents, caregivers, teachers, and community members with introductory information regarding mental health challenges that can affect children and youth. In May, we will be offering sessions on understanding autism, parenting strategies for positive mental health in children, and managing test anxiety in teens. In June, we are offering a special session on ‘junior-high jitters’ – transitioning to junior high school and the teenage years.

  • Adult Education SessionsNew!

In May, we are excited to offer a new two-part Lunch & Learn series for older adults called “Silver Linings – Supporting Wellness in the Later Years”.  This series will provide a basic overview of mental health challenges that older adults may face and some coping strategies and supports for addressing the stressors and promoting wellness. This session is for any adult wanting to support their own wellness, or the wellness of someone they live or work with.

  • Child and Adolescent Addiction & Mental Health Education Resource Library

On our website, you will find additional resource links to a variety of community websites, webinars, handouts, and modules on addiction and mental health topics pertaining to children and youth. These resources were gathered and reviewed by a mental health professional as part of the Building Service Capacity for Child and Adolescent Mental Health in Primary Care and Pediatrics project in partnership with Alberta Health Services, the Edmonton Zone Primary Care Networks, and CASA Mental Health.
